New Age meets Folk meets Tolkien Sally Oldfield was born in Ireland in 1947. Already as a little girl, her musical talent was discovered. At the age of eleven she received a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Dancing, and two years later she was accepted at the Royal Ballet School in White Lodge. She went on to study classical piano and English literature and philosophy at Bristol University. During this time she decided to devote her life to music and not to dance. Sally is the older sister of Mike Oldfield. Together they started their musical career. As a folk duo The Sallyangie, the siblings released their very first record Children Of The Sun in 1969. After that, Sally Oldfiled started her solo career and already set a milestone in 1978 with her debut album Water Bearer. The song Mirrors became her signature song, and the album became one of her greatest successes. Oldfield repeatedly draws on quotes and themes from J. R. R. Tolkien on Water Bearer, creating an epic feel like TolkienËœs The Lord of the Rings. The mixture of folk and new age paired with Celtic motifs later inspired artists like Enya or Loreena McKennitt.
